Trump Signals India Visit as Trade Negotiations Continue
President Donald Trump of the U.S. promised to visit India shortly, praising Prime Minister Narendra Modi as a "tough negotiator" at a bilateral meeting during the G7 summit in France. Relations had become strained due to recent decisions by President Trump that included imposing trade tariffs, imposing new import taxes related to forced labor policies, and lastly, the shooting down of Indian seafarers in the U.S. military's efforts to block off ports in Iran. In this regard, PM Modi had expressed grave concern to President Trump over the safety of the Indian seafarers in addition to expressing how the war with Iran negatively impacted the Indian economy since 90% of India's oil was imported. Regardless of the aforementioned issues, in addition to other areas of contention like immigration, H-1B visa programs, and Trump's offer to mediate the Kashmir conflict, the two parties were progressing towards sealing a final trade deal that would involve resumption of talks next week in Delhi.
